SlideShare Format Guide: PDF, PPT, PPTX and Images

Four formats, four different jobs. Here’s what each one actually does and when to reach for it.

Format 1

PDF

PDF captures each slide as a fixed page. Layout, text and images stay exactly as they appeared, and the file opens the same way on any device without needing PowerPoint or any specific software. It’s the best choice for reading, printing, studying and archiving, but it isn’t editable at the slide level. See SlideShare to PDF.

Format 2

PPT

PPT is the older PowerPoint file format. It keeps slides as editable objects rather than a flat page, which matters if you need to change text, rearrange slides or reuse content in your own deck. It’s most useful when you’re working with an older version of PowerPoint that doesn’t fully support PPTX. See SlideShare to PPT.

Format 3

PPTX

PPTX is the modern, XML based PowerPoint format used by PowerPoint 2007 and later, as well as Google Slides. For most people downloading a presentation to edit, PPTX is the safer default over PPT, since it’s what current software expects. See SlideShare to PPTX.

Format 4

Images

Downloading slides as individual images gives you a picture file per slide, useful for quickly referencing a single slide or dropping one into another document. Images aren’t editable presentation objects and don’t preserve the deck as a single file the way PDF or PPTX do.
